Funding and Distribution Guide for South Asian Independent Filmmakers

by Junaid Arif

As a Pakistani independent filmmaker navigating a landscape where local cinema culture is steadily diminishing due to socioeconomic constraints and limited infrastructure, I recognize the challenges of screening arthouse films within Pakistan. With multiplexes catering primarily to the upper-middle and elite classes, cinema-going has become a luxury inaccessible to much of the population. In light of this, my distribution strategy focuses on reaching international audiences, particularly the South Asian diaspora, and exploring pathways through global film festivals and OTT platforms with the intention that international visibility may ultimately facilitate accessibility within Pakistan. The following spreadsheet lists distribution companies that have previously engaged with Urdu/Hindi arthouse films or supported South Asian filmmakers. It includes relevant contact information, notable films distributed, and regional insights, serving as a starting point for outreach and potential collaboration.
